The Benefits of Letting Go
I recently received a note from Nancy, a Yoga for Fertility student: “I think my yoga practice really helped us achieve our dream of having a child. It was only when I was truly willing to let go and become parents in whatever ways manifested themselves that I finally got pregnant. Lynn reminded me that this is a basic yogic principle.”
Is it time for you to try letting go? One of the concepts we learn in yoga is how to do difficult things, or move through challenges, without struggling. Instead of grasping and gripping, we learn to accomplish challenging things by breathing and releasing as much as possible.
We can apply this concept to yoga poses or physical activities, but we can also apply it to situations that are emotionally or mentally challenging. Holding too tightly cuts off the flow of energy, whether it’s to a muscle group, or to a goal we are trying to reach.
I sometimes see students who are holding so tightly to the goal of pregnancy that they are restricting the energy that’s needed to make that happen. Although it may seem counter-intuitive to the Western mind, we can actually accomplish things more efficiently and effectively by letting go a bit, and creating more energetic space.
